The Tomb of Filishano

filishano

A general view of the Filishano Tomb, a beautiful historical monument, which needs to be repaired and protected in a better manner than at present.

One of the beautiful towers of the building, one on each corner of the roof, richly ornamented.

A pair of stone columns on each side of the main entrance to the building.

On the upper part of the main entrance to the building is the insignia of the Filisanu family, a crest which is also inside on the the coffins and on other representations of the family.

Inside, there are, around the central area, small secondary areas, complete with columns and arcades, for the graves and coffins they contain. Here there are arcades for every tomb inside, with geometric figures painted on them, and with stone columns on both sides, like an opened door to each grave.

Here we can see the columns and arcades inside the building, around the central area of the tomb.

Here Adrian is looking at a few bones discovered inside the tomb, perhaps taken from the graves, underground, covered by concrete, with empty wooden coffins above.

A secondary building, part of the monument, perhaps for servants to protect and maintain the building.

The cupola of the building from the inside, with rich paintings on it, with God as the central figure, and around him angels singing at many musical instruments, like a peaceful and harmonious accompaniment for the people in the graves.

The three fingers raised in the painting of God represents the Holy Trinity. The orb possibly represents the earth.

The main part of the tomb, the Altar, with a stone table protected by an iron fence with painted icons on it, with two entrances, a central one and a secondary entrance in the left part of the iron fence.

One of the four huge empty coffins, every one is above a concrete area, which covers the real graves which are underground. On the front of the coffin is an insiglia in bronze, with the symbols of the Filisanu family. Each coffin has rich sculptures on it, all are identical, and all are empty. .

In the northern part of Filiaşi, where the cemetery is placed, there is a 19th century monument, the tomb of an important land owner from Filiaşi, the Filishano family grave.

The monument is old, not well protected, but still not in ruins, but it needs protection and repairs soon.

The owner, Filishano, was a very good man who built the Filiaşi hospital himself as well as some water sources in the area, such as at Bilta, as well as this beautiful building, his tomb.

The landowner Filishano was here, in the Filiaşi area, from 1815.

In 1896 the Filishano tomb chapel was built, but it is today in a sad state of disrepair.

Pieces from the roof have fallen off, as can be seen in the photo to the immediate left. In the close up of the door to the chapel can be seen, above the door, the coat of arms of Filishano's family.

Smaranda and Dimitrie Filishanu, landowners in this district, died without children, but they left a legacy for the people of the area. Here is the hospital built and given free to the community in 1896.

Filishano spring water from Bilta, rebuilt by the authorities last year when the original stone with the inscription was broken and lost (?) and replaced with a new one.

These monuments are important because D. Filishano was a great man,who gave to the community, for free, important utilities such as the hospital, chapel, spring water etc. If only all communities had a man like him...
